YOU FORGOT TO MENTION TIMMINCO (TIM.TO) as one of the big makers of silicon needed for solar cells
John Libby
I live in Rizhao and the information in this article about Rizhao investing heavily in solar electricity is, unfortunately, incorrect. There are a few hundred solar cells that power street lights around a big lake in an uninhabited part of town but that's about it. Melbourne and Sydney in Australia have much more solar electricity than Rizhao and that all comes from private house owner’s systems. Rizhao makes much play of the fact that they have compulsory solar hot water systems too. Over 99% of households are said to have this. Firstly, the figure is probably something like 20% of households. Secondly, these solar systems are very unpopular and people with new houses complain that they have been forced to spend money on something that they will never use. They are controlled by computer systems that are impossible for the locals to understand and they waste a tremendous amount of water. Most apartment blocks here are at least 4 stories high and the hot water systems are located on top of the buildings. So much water that could be left in our river systems goes straight out to sea via the drains while people are waiting for the water to get hot on the lower floors. Finally, these systems just don’t deliver enough hot water for people to reliably shower in the mornings. Almost everybody turns them off during the first week after they move in. The gas is reliable and cheap and doesn’t waste water. John L. John Libby
